I use Microsoft Word for desktop and have a Box Drive integrated with the Finder. When I save new Word documents, the saved file name changes to start with ~$. When I attempt to open the file, I receive: Word found unreadable content in ~$____.docx. Do you want to recover the contents of this document? If you trust the source of this document, click Yes. I also noticed that there is a temp file automatically created in random folder locations that I don't recognize.

Regarding file names starting with ~% these are indeed temporary files that are associated with the currently open document(s) when stored on devices other than your Macbook, OneDrive or SharePoint. Mac OS may show them to you depending on the format of the file system on which the document(s) is/are stored. Temporary files are erased when the document is closed. Temporary files are not your document. Word uses them to store information about your document while it is open.

Trying to open or alter a temporary file can damage the file it is associated with. Michael Palladino, ~$____.docx sounds like some kind of temporary Word file. I have limited knowledge on how Box drive works, but it seems that Box drive is conflict with Word saving files in your case.
